Handte leads Lakeview

Taylor Handte led Lakeview Academy’s girls (17-9, 10-4 Region 8-A) with a game-high 16 points and Kelsey Gilbert added 10 in a 44-41 win against Hebron Christian on Wednesday at George Walton Academy.

Lakeview Academy advances to the semifinals of the Region 8-A Tournament and will host George Walton at 4 p.m. Friday in Gainesville.

BUFORD BOYS 63, MAYNARD JACKSON 42: A.J. Davis led the Wolves (20-6) with 20 points and 12 rebounds, and T.J. Shipes added 19 points and 10 rebounds Wednesday night in the Region 6-AA Tournament at Decatur High. Isaiah Williams added 13 points for Buford.

The Wolves have clinched a spot in the state tournament and the Region 6-AA semifinals at 5:30 p.m. on Friday against an opponent still to be determined.

DAWSON COUNTY BOYS 57, ELBERT COUNTY 44: Tyler Dominy led the Tigers with a team-high 15 points Wednesday in the Region 8-AA Tournament at East Hall High. Jonathan Sanderson and Will Anglin each added 11 points for Dawson County, and Gunnar Armstrong finished with 10.

The Tigers secured a spot in the state tournament and the Region 8-AA semifinals against East Hall at 8:30 p.m. Friday at Hart County.

WALNUT GROVE BOYS 70, JOHNSON 64 OT: Montrell McKenzie led the Knights in an overtime loss with 18 points and 20 rebounds Wednesday night in Gainesville. Matt Hollis added 17 points for Johnson and Ty Odem finished with 14 points.

The Knights’ season is now complete.

Soccer

NORTH HALL BOYS 3, NORTH FORSYTH 3: Junior Avalos, Dillon Martin and Chance Martin each scored goals for the Trojans on Tuesday.

The Trojans will host Stephens County at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday.

JOHNSON BOYS 1, NORTHVIEW 0: The Knights defense was led by Michael Cave, Armando Abarca, Alexis Segovia, and Mario Aguinaga. Tuesday in Duluth for a 5-4 victory in penalty kicks.

Both teams were unable to combine for a goal in regulation time, but all five Johnson kickers converted their attempts in the shootout.

Josh Martin recorded 15 saves for the Knights.

EAST HALL BOYS 6, OGLETHORPE COUNTY 0: Julio Avila scored three goals and had one assist for the Vikings on Tuesday night in Lexington. Saul Lopez added two goals and had one assist for East Hall and Jason Mendoza had one goal with two assists.

The Vikings host Jackson County at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday.

OGLETHORPE COUNTY GIRLS 4, EAST HALL 1: Cinthia Argueta scored the lone goal for the Lady Vikings on a free kick.

East Hall hosts Jackson County at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday.

FLOWERY BRANCH GIRLS 3, WEST HALL 0: Corrie Thomas scored two goals for the Lady Falcons (2-0) and Kayla Rodles added one goal Wednesday in Flowery Branch. Lauren Dunn recorded 11 saves in the shutout for Flowery Branch.

The Lady Falcons visit North Forsyth at 7:30 p.m. Friday.

GAINESVILLE GIRLS 11, LAKEVIEW ACADEMY 1: Liza Carpenter and Hartley Carter each scored three goals for the Lady Red Elephants and Anna Youmals had three assists Wednesday afternoon in Gainesville.

The Lady Red Elephants host Athens Academy at 5:30 p.m.

WEST HALL BOYS 1, FLOWERY BRANCH 0: Edgar Jaimes scored the game-winning goal for the Spartans, and Matt Lewis had the assist Wednesday night in Flowery Branch. Frankie Vazquez recorded six saves to mark his first shutout of the season for West Hall.

The Spartans visit Winder-Barrow at 5:30 p.m. today.
