Johnson boys advance in Region 8-AAA tournament

Montrell McKenzie led Johnson with a team-high 26 points, 17 rebounds and five blocks in a 77-71 win against Chestatee on Monday night in Monroe to advance to the Region 8-AAA quarterfinals.

Matt Hollis added 24 points for Johnson and Ty Odem finished with 17 points and 11 rebounds.

Cole Morgan led all scorers with 28 points for the War Eagles, Keelan Passmore added 15 and Jordan Degraff finished with 12.

Chestatee took a 19-13 lead at the end of the first quarter, but Johnson outscored the War Eagles 23-14 in the second to take a 36-33 lead into the half. Chestatee bounced back and led 69-63 with less than four minutes left in the game before the Knights closed the game on a 14-2 run.

Johnson visits Walnut Grove at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday. Chestatee's season is now complete.

LUMPKIN COUNTY BOYS 62, WEST HALL 56: Hunter Polk led the Indians with a team-high 13 points and Devonte Anderson added 12 Monday night in Franklin County to advance to the Region 8-AAA quarterfinals.

Tyswon Cantrell led the Spartans with a game-high 28 points and Hunter Atkinson added 13. West Hall's season is now complete.

The Indians visit North Hall at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday.

MONROE AREA BOYS 45, WHITE COUNTY 35: Andrew London and Eddie Hurst each scored 11 points, and the Warriors held Monroe Area's Ken Jackson to only 12 points on Monday during the first round of the Region 8-AAA tournament in Monroe. White County's season is now complete.

Monroe Area advances to take on Stephens County at 6 p.m. Wednesday at Walnut Grove.

Tennis

EAST HALL BOYS 3, JOHNSON 2: Dane Allen recorded a 6-1, 6-0 win in the No. 1 singles for the Vikings on Monday. No. 1 doubles pair Patricio Cruz and Milton Campbell won 6-2, 6-4 for East Hall and the No. 2 doubles team of Bradley Wine and Nathan Vandiver finished 6-0, 6-4.

Oscar Rivera and Marvin Doan shut out their opponents in singles for the Knights.

Johnson visits West Hall at 4 p.m. today.

FLOWERY BRANCH BOYS 3, WEST FORSYTH 2: A.J. Morris won 6-4, 6-1 in No. 1 singles and Beau Millwood won 6-1, 6-1 in No. 3 singles for the Falcons on Monday in Cumming. No. 2 doubles pair Issac Black and Nathan Senghammee recorded a 6-1, 6-2 win for Flowery Branch.

The Falcons visit Dacula on Feb. 23.

FLOWERY BRANCH GIRLS 3, WEST FORSYTH 2: No. 1 doubles pair Durden Smith and Bekki Benton won 6-4, 6-4 in doubles for the Lady Falcons on Monday in Cumming. Dani Taylor and Madison Smith won 6-4, 6-4 in the No. 2 doubles for Flowery Branch and Nicole Morris finished 6-2, 6-4 in the No. 3 singles.

The Lady Falcons visit John's Creek on Feb. 21.

Soccer

FLOWERY BRANCH GIRLS 2, GAINESVILLE 0: Cassidy Elrod led the Lady Falcons (1-0) with both goals in Monday's game in Gainesville. Lauren Dunn recorded the shutout for Flowery Branch.

The Lady Falcons host West Hall at 5 p.m. Wednesday in Flowery Branch.

GAINESVILLE BOYS 3, FLOWERY BRANCH 0: Douglas Mejia led the Red Elephants (1-0) with a goal and an assist Monday night in Gainesville. Gage Turner and Eric Romero each added goals and Juan Remes and Edger Espenoza combined for the shutout for the Red Elephants.

Gainesville visits Mill Creek at 7:30 p.m. Thursday in Hoschton.
