Gainesville boys, girls secure No. 2 seed

The Gainesville High boys defeated Johnson 71-54 Thursday in Gainesville. The Red Elephants (17-7, 10-2) were led by Shaquan Cantrell with 14 points, and Deshaun Watson with 11. Johnson was led by Matt Hollis with 20 points, and Cam Schofield with 11.

Gainesville will be the No. 2 seed from subregion 8B-AAA heading into next week’s region tournament.

With the loss, Johnson (11-14, 3-9) fell into a tie for fifth in subregion 8B-AAA with Oconee County, but lost the coin flip and will be seeded sixth in the region tournament.

GAINESVILLE GIRLS 38, JOHNSON 32: The Lady Red Elephants earned a second seed going into the Region 8-AAA tournament next week with a dominant 37-17 rebounding performance against the Lady Knights on Thursday.

Rebecca Webster led Gainesville (14-11, 9-3 8B-AAA) with 16 points, while Kate Callahan added 10. Webster also pulled down nine rebounds for the Lady Red Elephants, who play an opponent to be determined at 6 p.m. Wednesday at Chestatee in the second round of the region tournament. 

Lyndsey Pethel led Johnson (14-11, 8-4) with 11 points. The Lady Knights will open play in the region tournament Monday.
