Flowery Branch girls advance in tennis

With a sweep of doubles, the Flowery Branch girls tennis team advanced to the second round of the state playoffs Wednesday by defeating Carrollton 3-2 in Carrollton.

After losing at No. 1 and No. 2 singles, Morgan Reed managed to stave off elimination for the Lady Falcons by winning her No. 3 singles match, 6-3, 6-1.

The doubles team of Nicki Price and Molly Smith evened the match at 2-2 with a 7-5, 6-3 victory.

In the final match, the doubles team of Bekki Benton and Dani Taylor won 6-1, 6-2 to give Flowery Branch the win.

The Lady Falcons will play in the second round against the winner of the Morgan County/St. Pius match.

WEST HALL BOYS 5, CEDARTOWN 0: Brenden Worth, Connor McFall and Max Wilson swept singles play for the Spartans in the first round of the Class AAA state playoffs on Wednesday at the Bobby Bailey Tennis Center.

Tyler Burgamy/Jimmy Kincaid and Andrew Johnson/Nathan Turner swept doubles matches for West Hall (16-5).

The Spartans visit Oconee County at 4 p.m. Friday in the second round of the playoffs. 

CARROLLTON BOYS 4, GAINESVILLE 1: Singles player Ryan Joiner had the only win for Gainesville in its first round loss to Carrollton on Wednesday in the Class AAA state tournament at Carrollton.

With the loss, Gainesville’s season is now complete.

WHITFIELD BOYS 3, LAKEVIEW ACADEMY 0: The Lions were swept in the opening round of the state tournament Wednesday in Mableton. With the loss, Lakeview’s season is now complete.

GAINESVILLE 15, WHITE COUNTY 1: Hunter Anglin went 2-for-4 with four RBIs, two runs scored and two home runs to lead the Red Elephants to a win Wednesday in Cleveland.

K.J. McAllister went 3-for-4 with five RBIs, Sloan Strickland went 3-for-3 with two RBIs and Will Maddox went 2-for-3 with two RBIs for Gainesville (20-1, 15-0 Region 7B-AAA).

Maddox and David Gonzalez each added a home run for Gainesville, which plays host to West Hall at 7 p.m. Friday.

CHESTATEE 9, WEST FORSYTH 5: Scott Chewning had three hits, an RBI and two runs scored to lead the War Eagles to the win Wednesday at home.

James Kibbler and Kevin Clifford each had an RBI for Chestatee (11-9, 6-9 Region 7A-AAA).

Dustin Peck picked up the win on the mound for Chestatee, which visits Lumpkin County at 5:55 p.m. Friday.

UNION COUNTY 2, RIVERSIDE MILITARY 1: With the score tied 1-1 in the top of the sixth inning, Blake Gowder hit what became the game-winning home run for the Panthers on Wednesday in Gainesville.

Chaiz George earned his fourth win of the season on the mound for Union County (14-6, 10-5 Region 8-AA). The Panthers play host to a doubleheader with Banks County at 5 p.m. Friday.

CREEKVIEW 6, FLOWERY BRANCH 2: Creekview hit for five runs in the bottom half of the fifth inning to earn the win Wednesday in Canton.

Cory Sanderson had two hits and an RBI for Flowery Branch (4-18, 4-12 Region 7B-AAA), which plays host to Johnson at 5:55 p.m. Friday.

JEFFERSON 10, WALNUT GROVE 0 (TUESDAY): Kyle Hardy, Jamie Sexton and Jake Fields combined to throw a five-inning no-hitter Tuesday in Jefferson.

Hardy earned the win on the mound, going 1-for-2 with three RBIs and a double at the plate.

Sexton went 2-for-2 with three runs scored, a home run and four RBIs and Fields went 1-for-2 with a double and an RBI for Jefferson (17-3, 14-1 Region 8-AA).

Andrew Bartek went 1-for-2 with a home run, a run scored and two RBIs for the Dragons, who visit Rabun County for a doubleheader at 5 p.m. Friday.

WHITE COUNTY GIRLS 3, CHESTATEE 1: Three players scored to lead the Lady Warriors to the win Wednesday at Chestatee.
Krista Terry, Savannah Castles and Jena Milwood each scored a goal for White County (7-11, 2-9 Region 7-AAA), which completed its season with the win.

LAKEVIEW ACADEMY GIRLS 4, MT. PISGAH 1: Maddie Haymore scored two goals in the win Wednesday in Ringgold.
Lindsey Brock and Liz Kenny each added a goal for Lakeview, which completed its season with the win.

MT. PISGAH BOYS 4, LAKEVIEW ACADEMY 0: The Lions failed to convert a goal in the final game of the season Wednesday in Ringgold.

FLOWERY BRANCH BOYS 3, POPE 3: Despite having eight more shots on goal than Pope, the Falcons could only manage a tie Wednesday in Flowery Branch.

Phillip Abrahamsen scored three goals for Flowery Branch (7-10-1, 5-6 Region 7-AAA). With the tie, the Falcons’ season is now complete.
