High school football: New No. 1 in Class AAAAA

Not surprisingly, there was a new No. 1 atop the Class AAAAA rankings when the Associated Press Georgia High School Football Poll was released Tuesday.

Lowndes, which has held the top spot much of the season, slid to No. 4 in the state's largest classification after a 10-7 loss to Northside-Warner Robins on Friday.

Grayson assumed Class AAAAA top ranking, followed by Northside-Warner Robins and North Gwinnett.

Locally, Gainesville maintained a firm hold on No. 1 in Class AAA, receiving all 10 first-place votes. Flowery Branch moved up one spot to No. 7 in Class AAA.

The area placed two teams in the Class AA's top six (No. 3 Buford and No. 7 Jefferson). Both teams were up one spot from last week, thanks to losses from Lovett and Pepperell.
