Gainesville grad Spencer Ralston cards 2-over par in first round of US Amateur event in Michigan

Gainesville High graduate and University of Georgia freshman Spencer Ralston shot a 2-over par 72 to wrap up opening-round play of the U.S. Amateur golf tournament Monday at Oakland Hills Country Club in Bloomfield Hills, Mich.

Ralston sunk three birdies — two on the front nine — and five bogeys to finish tied for 118th. Ralston is currently eight strokes off the lead, as Dawson Armstrong of Brentwood, Tenn. sits atop the leaderboards at 6-under par 62 heading into Round 2.

Gainesville alumnus Jackson Bishop, who now plays at Western Carolina University, carded a 4-over par 74 with three birdies and seven bogeys in the opening round.

Tee times for Round 2 begin as early as 7:40 a.m. today.
