CONYERS — The Flowery Branch High cross country teams scored decisive team titles in the Region 8-AAAAA championships at Georgia International Horse Park on Saturday.
Jake Shewbert earned the boys individual title with a 16:36.55 to pace the Falcons taking three of the top four spots, four of the top seven and six of the top 17.
Gainesville’s Juan Ortega in second at 16:49.34, followed by Flowery Branch’s Grant O’Callaghan (16:53) and Shawn Olmstead (16:55.04) in third and fourth respectively.
Other top-17 finishers for the Falcons boys were Miguel Martinez in seventh (17:31.29), Clayton Thayer in 16th (17:58.69) and Trevor Purvis in 17th (17:59.08) as the team totaled 31 points to easily outdistance second-place Gainesville’s 88.
Flowery Branch’s boys are looking to repeat this coming Saturday in Carrollton after last season’s Class AAAAA title, the Falcons’ fourth since 2008.
The Flowery Branch girls swept the second through fifth spots and had a total of seven runners in the top 19 en route to 24 points and the Region 8-AAAAA team championship, 36 points ahead of second-place Loganville.
Winder-Barrow’s Micah Weathers won the girls individual title in 20:59.28. Behind her were Flowery Branch’s Mariah Millsap (21:08.73), Cassie Ward (21:10.86), Hailey Pierson (21:23.63) and Shannon Hoolahan (21.25.75) to round out the top five.
Other top-19 finishers for the Lady Falcons were 10th-place Erika Plummer (21:53.25), 16th-place Ashley Grant (22:33.37) and 19th-place Sarah Slavik (22:44.36).
