FLOWERY BRANCH — It took eight possessions and a total of four minutes and 20 seconds for Flowery Branch to move to 2-0 in Region 7B-AAA play.
Led by senior quarterback Connor Shaw who was 10-of-12 passing for 174 yards and three touchdowns and had 21 yards rushing and one touchdown, the Falcons (5-1, 2-0 Region 7B-AAA) beat West Hall 62-14 on Friday night at Falcon Field.
Six different players scored for Flowery Branch in the first half as the Falcons made it into the end zone on seven of their first eight possessions.
Those seven scoring drives took 4:20 of the 24 minutes played.
"We preached all week that if we’re going to keep getting better, we have to get better every game," Flowery Branch coach Lee Shaw said. "Our kids came in focused and ready to go."
Especially on the defensive end. The Falcons held the area’s leading passer, Shunquez Stephens, to 162 yards passing and the Spartans to 251 yards of total offense.
"We knew our defense was going to be tested and they were," Shaw said. "(Stephens) has been throwing the ball really well and our defense stepped up and got great pressure on him."
Mykah Hester, Matt Tiller and Matt Bell each recovered fumbles for a Flowery Branch defense that also sacked Stephens five times in the game.
After Hester’s fumble recovery on the game’s first play from scrimmage, it was obvious that the Falcons’ offense had come to play as well as it capped a three-play, 42-second drive with a 15-yard pass from Shaw to Rodney Young.
After holding West Hall to two-straight three-and-outs, the Falcons got on the board again. Darius Kimbrough darted through the Spartans’ defense on his way to a 30-yard touchdown run.
Flowery Branch scored on runs of 1 yard (Shaw) and 32 yards (Imani Cross) on its next two possessions to take a 28-0 lead midway through the second quarter.
That’s when senior wide receiver Rodriquez Frazier took over.
He caught a 13-yard touchdown pass from Shaw on the first play from scrimmage following a 41-yard punt return by Young to make the score 35-0. He scored again when, after West Hall scored on a 60-yard pass from Stephens to Marquis Young, he returned the ensuing kickoff 86 yards for another Falcons’ score.
Young led the Spartans’ offense with eight catches for 102 yards and a touchdown.
Robbie Boudreau capped the first-half offensive onslaught with a 34-yard touchdown catch from Shaw to give Flowery Branch an insurmountable 48-6 lead at halftime.
When all was said and done, six different receivers had receptions for the Falcons totalling 270 yards, and seven different rushers had carries totalling 162 yards.
"Sometimes it’s hard when you know you’ve got a lot of guys who can get it done offensively," Shaw said. "There’s not enough time on the clock to allow them to showcase their skills.
"These guys practice hard though and I’m glad we were able to let a bunch of them play tonight."
Backup quarterback Logan Conley replaced Shaw at halftime and was responsible for two more Flowery Branch touchdowns on a 31-yard pass to Javonte Meddow and a 2-yard run.
Conley finished the game 4-of-5 passing for 96 yards and a touchdown.
West Hall scored its second and final touchdown of the game on a 1-yard run by Ishmail Nuckles.
