Flowery Branch’s chances to repeat as Lanierland girls champions looked about as good as they could Thursday.
The Lady Falcons dominated Lakeview Academy from start to finish, clinching a spot in Friday’s Lanierland title game with a 70-48 victory. Flowery Branch (11-2) used its superior size to out-rebound the Lady Lions 47-20, and junior guard Taniyah Worth led all scorers with 19 points and added 11 boards for a double-double.
“That’s something that we’ve got to take advantage of with our height, especially when we play teams that aren’t as tall as us,” Flowery Branch coach Courtney Newton-Gonzalez said. “We’ve got to crush the boards. We get a lot of junk rebounds and points out of that.”
Seniors Julianne Sutton and Janoah Williams grabbed eight rebounds and six rebounds, respectively, while sophomore guard Caroline Wysocki pulled down nine.
The Lady Falcons went into halftime leading 40-18 before Lakeview (11-3) briefly threatened by making four straight shots to begin the third quarter. But Worth responded with nine points to keep the Lady Lions at bay.
Hanna Grogan finished as Lakeview’s leading scorer, tallying 16 points alongside six rebounds.
No. 1 seed Flowery Branch faces No. 7 seed West Hall for the Lanierland girls championship at 6:30 p.m. Friday at Gainesville High School.
The third-place game will feature the No. 5 seed Lady Lions against No. 3 seed Gainesville at 3:30 p.m.
