The Buford baseball team split its doubleheader in the best-of-three playoff series against Pierce County in the Class AA state quarterfinals with a 8-6 loss in Game 1 and a 14-2 win in Game 2 on Tuesday night in Buford. With the split, the Wolves will play a deciding Game 3 at 3 p.m. today, again in Buford.

“We feel like we’re going to have to show up play defense tomorrow” Buford coach Tony Wolfe said. “I’m proud of them, they fought back and played hard tonight.”

Sam Clay led Buford in Game 1 going 3 for 3 with a double and a home run and three RBIs.

Kyler Berrett had a grand slam in the third inning of Game 2 for the Wolves, a two-run double in the fourth and a double in the sixth with six RBIs.

Austin Upshaw earned the win for Buford in the nightcap, while going 2 for 3 at the plate with two RBIs.

“I like the way our kids responded tonight,” Wolfe said. “I hope that’ll be enough to get the win (today).”
