The Buford softball team advanced to the state quarterfinals for the 14th-straight season after sweeping Woodland on Wednesday in the second round of the Class 5-A playoffs in Cartersville.
The No. 2 seeded Lady Wolves (17-10) will face the winner of top-seeded Locust Grove and No. 2 Starr’s Mill, in Columbus at a date and time to be determined. Buford defeated the Wildcats 13-0 in Game 1 before capturing the sweep with a 6-3 win in the nightcap game.
Ansleigh Hollifield was the winning pitcher for the Lady Wolves in the opener with four strikeouts. Mariah Wicker homered for Buford, while teammates Shea Bayreuther (four RBI) and Hannah Morgan (three RBI) combined for seven RBIs to lead the order.
Kaitlyn Pickens was the starting pitcher for the Lady Wolves in Game 2, striking out four batters over five innings. Morgan drove in a pair of runs, while teammate Wicker plated another for Buford.
