High school basketball scoreboard: Flowery Branch boys upset Villa Rica in first round of Class 5A playoffs

Patsheko Lutumba hit the go-ahead free throw with 1.6 seconds left as the Flowery Branch High boys basketball team upset Villa Rica, 45-44, in the opening round of the Class 5A state tournament Saturday in Villa Rica. 

Tied 44-44 with two shots at the free throw line, Lutumba hit the first and intentionally missed the second as teammate Joey Nidoy grabbed the rebound to lock up the victory against Class 5A’s sixth-ranked Wildcats (24-3), per MaxPreps. 

Justin Quick led third-seeded Flowery Branch with 14 points, Myles Janess finished with nine and Lutumba chipped in eight points.

With the win, Flowery Branch (18-11) moves on to face No. 1 seed Lithonia next week in DeKalb County. Lithonia won its first-round game 57-49 against Banneker on Friday.

JEFFERSON GIRLS 43, CHESTATEE 38: Lindsey Caudell scored 16 points for the Lady War Eagles, and Christina Garcia added 12 in the first round of the Class 4A state tournament Saturday in Jefferson. 

DAWSON COUNTY BOYS 66, MONROE AREA 53: Campbell Reed scored a team-high 17 points for the Tigers (19-9) in the first round of the Class 3A state playoffs Saturday in Dawsonville. 

Also for Dawson County, Ryan Gallenkamp had 15 points and six rebounds, and Cullen Reed had 13 points, five rebounds and five assists. With the win, the Tigers advance to face the Cedar Grove in the second round next week in Ellenwood.
