Less than two months away from the 2023 U.S. Open Golf Championship, there remains a chance a Gainesville native will be among the field.
Spencer Ralston, a 2016 Gainesville High graduate, four-time Tommy Aaron Award winner as Hall County Player of the Year and former University of Georgia standout, was among seven individuals on Monday to advance to the final round of qualifying for the 123rd edition of the major championship.
Ralston shot a 2-under par 68 to tie for second place with Mclain Leberte, of Roswell, in a local qualifier event at Marietta Country Club in Kennesaw.
That number was just two shots behind tournament champion Jared Du Toit of Scottsdale, Ariz.
That trio will be able to compete in one of 10 different final qualifiers throughout the United States that will take place from May 22 to June 5.
Ralston has competed in eight events on the Korn Ferry Tour this season, making the cut in two of those events, and is coming off a 2022 season that saw him make the cut in nine of 14 tour events, including three top 10 finishes.
