GREENSBORO — The University of Georgia Athletics Association board has approved up to $40 million to add 53,000 square feet of space to its football facilities.
A new weight room, coaches offices, new training facilities and a large multi-purpose area will be added to the Butts-Mehre athletics building in Athens under the plan approved Thursday.
Athletics director Damon Evans said about half the money will come from private donations and the rest borrowed. University President Michael Adams said he supports the project as long as 50 percent of the money is raised.
The board also approved a fiscal year 2010 operating budget of $71.4 million, up 12.2 percent. Projected revenue is $84.8 million, including a new SEC television contract that offsets a drop of $2 million-$3 million in contributions tied to football season tickets.
