The Gainesville boys soccer team (18-2-1) are currently down 3-0 at halftime in the 6A Championship match against Dalton (22-0).
The heavily physical match began to turn tides at the 20 minute mark after the first water break. Dalton’s Yahir Paez scored and Tony Saldana followed five minutes later with a header to the backend of the net.
With seven minutes remaining in the half, Nathan Rincon scored off a simple set piece, in which none of the Red Elephants picked up the threat. After the goal, keeper Eduardo Bautista argued Rincon was offsides.
Gainesville struggled to cross midfield throughout the half, but the Red Elephants made pressurized strides to the goal when possible.
Fifteen minutes in, Gainesville earned a free kick and sent the ball directly to goalkeeper Ricardo Beltran, who subbed in after starter Nestor Mendez left with an injury. Beltran batted the ball directly to another Red Elephant and nearly caught the back of the net.
Jose Rodriguez’s free kick hit the goalpost with six minutes remaining.
Threats were made, but the Red Elephants have nothing to show for it.
Dalton’s physicality forced Gainesville to press more near the 20 minute mark. Anthony Alday and Erick Sica-Ixcoy received yellow cards, forcing fouls to try and halt the swift Catamounts.
