G-Braves win season opener

Gregor Blanco finished 2-for-5 with an RBI in the Gwinnett Braves’ season-opening 8-6 win against the Charlotte Knights on Thursday at Coolray Field. The Triple-A G-Braves (1-0) took the lead with a two-run doubles from Wes Timmons in the bottom of the sixth that scored Brandon Hicks and Clint Sammons.

Sammons scored again in the eighth inning on a fielder’s choice.

In the first inning, the G-Braves scored four runs. Barbaro Canizares doubled to score Joe Thurston, followed by an RBI single by Freddie Freeman.

Sammons added a two-run double before the end of the inning.

Gwinnett’s Jonny Venters pitched two innings in relief and earned the win. The G-Braves play host to Charlotte at 7 p.m. tonight.
