Johnson High athletics director Tony Wagner announced Thursday that its football program will take part in a non-region schedule for the next two seasons.

The decision was made after the Knights played the 2021 season in Class 5A with less than 20 athletes on their roster.

Wagner said that the school notified the Georgia High School Association of its intention before the March 1 deadline.

Johnson went winless in 2020 and 2021 in football.

In the coming fall, Johnson High will move into Class 4A, along with Cherokee Bluff, Chestatee, North Hall and East Hall.

Next season, Johnson will still play its annual Battle of Oakwood game against West Hall, along with a game against East Hall.
