Chicopee Woods Championship
When: Today and Sunday
Where: Chicopee Woods Golf Course
Last year's winner: Derek Watson
The 21st annual Chicopee Woods Championship golf championship begins today at Chicopee Woods Golf Course.
The tournament is an individual stroke play tournament over 36 holes and will use the gold, blue, and white tees at Chicopee Woods.
Over 80 golfers from all over the area will compete in the tournament this year, including more than 30 in the championship flight.
“Most are local Chicopee Woods golfers, but some are from Royal Lakes and Chattahoochee, and we have some from Athens and Dahlonega,” said Jim Arendt, the course’s director of golf.
Last year’s champion Derek Watson will look to defend his title at this year’s tournament, along with other golfers looking to win a second title and champions of the Chicopee Woods Senior Championship hoping to win this title as well. Chicopee Woods Golf Course plays over 50,000 rounds per year, but Arendt feels that the rounds this weekend are some of the most important.
“They play for the title and to have their name forever on the championship trophy,” Arendt said.
“The person that wind this tournament can kind of say they’re the best golfer in the area.”
This weekend will determine who gets these kinds of bragging rights.
