Local golf: Cagle, Kiddie lead men's, women's championships at Royal Lakes

Johnson High graduate and Georgia State University golfer Jared Cagle leads the men’s championship and Mary Beth Kiddie leads the women’s division with one round remaining in the Royal Lakes Club Championship in Flowery Branch.

Cagle shot a 70 Friday and a 71 Saturday to take a four stroke lead with one day to go, four strokes ahead of Bailey Ulp (145). Mike Bennett and Johnson grad Grant Cagle are tied for third at 150.

Kiddie shot an 87 Saturday and leads Garnett Smith by one stroke and Linda Barrett by two heading into the final round today.

In the other divisions, which use net scoring, Ted McCraw (70) leads the Blue Division by three strokes over Luther Beck and Josh McGee, and Bobby Jones and Pat Smith are tied at 71 in the first flight of the White Division, two ahead of Daryl Hower and Steve Blair. Don McEachin (70) leads the second flight of the White Division, with Bob Bauguss (71) in second and Bill Baker (78) in third, and Jack Kenney (67) leads the Gold Division by two ahead of Gordy Crenshaw and Jack Barrett.

Lori McEachin (63) leads the ladies’ Red Division, ahead of Mary Gruwell (73) and Pat Kilgore (74).

CLGA: Sue Cronmiller, Johann Stone, and Nora Gleason took first place at the Chattahoochee Ladies Golf Association event last Tuesday at Chattahoochee Golf Course. Carolyn Palmer, Martha Shell, and Ann White took second place in the Lauderdale event. Closest to the pin winners were Cronmiller (No. 3), and Ann Hollobaugh (No. 17).

CMGA: The Chattahoochee Men’s Golf Association played a two-man team match play event last Wednesday at the Chattahoochee Golf Course. Dave Long and Bill Holleman finished in first place. Partners Wayne Nelson and Rick Reed and Gene Weschler and his blind-draw partner tied for second place. Eight teams tied for fourth. Closest to the pin winners were Paul Payne (No. 3), Don Sorrell (No. 5), Bud Clegg (No. 12), and Bill Sutton (No. 17).

DOGFIGHT: Tom Bolton, Cleve Sexton, Eric Awtry and Horace Smallwood finished in first place last week at the Wednesday Dogfight at Chicopee Woods Golf Course. David Orlofsky, Don Schrum, Keith Fitzpatrick and Henry Komoto came in second. Individually, Darrel Pinner finished in first place with a score of 66, Dan Arthurs came in second with a 68 and Bolton and Geoff Archibald tied for third with scores of 69. Keith Fitzgerald was fifth with a score of 70, and Awtry finished in sixth with a 71.

LUNA’S TUESDAY: The Luna’s Tuesday golf group played last Tuesday at Royal Lakes. First place went to the team of Frank House, Larry Miller, Joe Roberts and Royce Deaton. Tom Sexton, Blake Nix, Tommy Lowery and Johnny Nix came in second. Randy Gordy, Doug Van, Gene Weschler and Joe Campbell were third. Closest to the pin winners were B. Nix (No. 4), Lowery (No. 8), Jerry Johns (No. 14) and House (No. 16).

DPG: The Dedicated Players Group played matches on Monday, Wednesday and Friday last week at Chicopee Woods Golf Course. Charley Kilby finished in first place on Monday, Jerry Horton came in second, and James Roberts was third. Kilby won again on Wednesday, and Steve Knowles and Dewey Albertson tied for second. Albertson took first place on Friday, and Knowles finished in second place.
