COLUMBUS — Buford’s softball team continued its winning ways on Thursday, winning a pair of games to open the Class AAA state softball tournament in Columbus.
Top-ranked Buford (35-1) beat Central-Carrollton 3-2 in the first game of the day, before beating Ringgold 10-2 several hours later. With the wins, Buford will face either North Oconee or Pierce County in the winner’s bracket today. First pitch is tentatively scheduled for 5 p.m., although the time is subject to change due heavy rain forecast for the area.
In the first game, Buford was limited to just three hits, but used a dominating pitching performance from junior Bria Bush to limit Central-Carrollton to just one earned run. Bush pitched a complete game for the Lady Wolves, allowing one earned run on five hits, while striking out four batters.
The Lady Wolves scored all three of its run in the bottom of the fourth inning. Sydney Stavro finished the game 1 for 2 with two runs bated in, while Baylee Sexton was 1 for 1 with the Lady Wolves’ third RBI.
In the night game against Ringgold, Buford used a six-run second inning to blow the game open. The inning was fueled by a grand slam from Morgan Walters, who finished the night game 3 for 3 with 5 RBIs.
The Lady Wolves started the scoring in the first inning and added three more runs in the third inning.
Tessa Daniels and Jordan Deep each recorded a hit in the night game and finished with two RBIs each.
In the circle, Bush earned the win. The Tennessee commit allowed two runs on five hits and struck out five in the second game victory.
