Piedmont men's soccer wins season opener

The Piedmont College men’s soccer team won their season opener on Thursday, defeating Tennessee Temple University 7-1 at home.

Freshman Justin Whitaker scored two early goals, each within a minute of each other. Piedmont grabbed another score in the ninth minute as senior Jon Reinert put a free kick in the back of the net. Junior Nick Weatherby followed with a score in the 24th minute.

Tennessee Temple finally got on the board in the 39th minute on a converted penalty kick.

The second half was more of the same for Piedmont; sophomore Brooks Willis score in the 56th minute while newcomer Stephen Sherfy knocked in a Weatherby service in the 81st minute. Willis rounded out the scoring in the 88th minute, scoring off a deflection in front of goal.

Piedmont will travel to Toccoa Falls College for a match beginning at 7 p.m. Saturday.
