Kevin Caldwell led No. 10 Piedmont College (13-3) pitching seven innings while only allowing three hits and three walks in a 4-1 win against Marietta, the No. 1 team in the country and reigning NCAA Champions Friday night in Demorest.
Until the bottom of the seventh, Piedmont was trailing 1-0 and had only tallied one hit and had one guy in scoring position. The Lions tied the game in the seventh off of a bunt from Junior Tim Nunez. With two outs and bases loaded, Tate Koons hit a line drive to centerfield to that cleared the bases and secure the win for Piedmont.
Golf
The North Georgia College & State University women’s golf team shot an aggregate score of 327 on Monday to hold a commanding lead after the opening round of the 2012 North Georgia Spring Invitational contested at the par 72 Achasta. Gainesville graduate LeeAnn Noble sits tied for 10th after her opening round of 96.
The Lady Saints hold a 26 stroke advantage over Young Harris, while Truett-McConnell sits 67 shots off the pace heading into day two of the action.
The North Georgia men’s golf team fired an aggregate score of 301 to hold the lead after the opening round of the 2012 North Georgia Spring Invitational contested at the par 72 Achasta by Reynolds.
Lumpkin County graduate Aaron George sits deadlocked in third place after shooting three-over-par for the Saints, and Gainesville graduate, Jake Martin sits tied for 11th place after shooting eight-over-par 80’s in round one.
Both teams wrap up the 2012 North Georgia Spring Invitational with a 9:30 shotgun start tomorrow morning at Achasta.
