The 12th-ranked University of North Georgia softball team began its third early season tournament with a 6-4 victory against the University of West Alabama on Friday in Decatur, Ala.
Tiffanie Burns sent one out of the park for the Saints (8-2) in the third inning to get the team rolling. Karlie Gillam then plated another three runs in the next inning when she blasted her own home run, this one to left-center field.
Taylor Merritt finished the game 2 for 2 at the plate with one run batted in and two runs scored while Burns went 2 for 3 including her solo homer.
Krysten Connelly claimed her first win of the season as she pitched six innings with four strikeouts, while Courtney Poole came in for the final inning to claim her first save.
NORTH GEORGIA 9, CHARLESTON 0: The Saints continued to roll as they recorded 11 hits, while run-ruling the University of Charleston (W. Va.) Golden Eagles in five innings.
The scoring drive started in the bottom of the first inning when Kim McMillan scored off a throwing error by the Charleston third baseman. Katherine Martin then batted Merritt in to push the score to 2-0 a few batters later.
McMillan went 3 for 3 with three runs batted in while Merritt, Gillam and Johnson each went 2 for 3.
Poole pitched the complete game for the Saints to improve to 6-0 for the year, giving up just three hits and striking out six batters.
North Georgia will continue in the Charger Chillout tournament against the University of West Georgia at 2 p.m. today in Decatur, Ala.
MILLERSVILLE 4, NORTH GEORGIA 1: The University of North Georgia fell to Millersville University in the first game of the North Georgia Classic on Friday in Dahlonega.
The Saints (1-6) scored their only run of the game in the seventh inning as Devin Gearhart scored off a ground out by Travis Naraine.
Junior right-handed pitcher Christian Turnipseed accepted his second loss of the season in four innings of work, but not before he struck out three batters and picked a runner off at second base to close out the first inning.
North Georgia faces the sixth-ranked University of West Florida Argonauts at 1 p.m. today in Dahlonega.
