The No. 3 University of North Georgia baseball team relinquished an early lead and fell, 9-4, to West Chester in Saturday’s opening round of the NCAA Division II Baseball Championship in Grand Prairie, Texas.

The Nighthawks (46-11) scored three runs in the top of the second inning, before West Chester’s (41-11) used four runs in the third and five in the seventh to snap North Georgia’s four-game NCAA tourney winning streak.

The Nighthawks took an early lead courtesy of a Steven Tomlinson (2 for 4) RBI triple, ground out by Andres Perez and Connor Hoover’s (3 for 4, 2 RBI) one-run single.

West Chester’s Jared Melone (2 for 4, HR, 4 RBI) belted the go-ahead grand slam in the very next frame.

Daniel McCrary took just his second loss of the season for North Georgia, allowing five unearned runs and four hits.

The Nighthawks face the loser of Lindenwood and No. 2 Delta State at 4 p.m. on Monday for an elimination game at The Ball Park in Grand Prairie. This is North Georgia’s first appearance in the national tournament.

The Nighthawks advanced through the Southeast Regional with a 5-4 win against Catawba on Monday.

In that game, Perez had the go-ahead home run for the Nighthawks in the eighth inning.
