The Brenau University tennis team swept Southern Nazarene 5-0 today in the second round of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics National Tournament in Mobile, Ala. After receiving a bye in the first round and sweeping the No. 10-ranked Storm, the No. 7 Golden Tigers (16-5) enter the quarterfinals against No. 2 seed Fresno Pacific (Calif.) at 9 a.m. Thursday.

Brenau’s No. 1 doubles duo of Lyn See Choo and Hannah Thompson defeated Deisi Bolivar and Karina Kotova 8-3.

“It is great to move forward in the tournament and, once again, be amongst the top eight teams at Nationals,” Golden Tigers coach Andre Ferreira said. “We look forward to facing Fresno Pacific.”

Fresno Pacific defeated No. 15 Indiana Wesleyan 5-0 in the second round.

“It is always exciting to play one of the best teams in the country,” Ferreira said. “So we are prepared to give our best.”

The Golden Tigers swept the rest of the doubles with Maria Perdoma-Medina and Eline Nagels recording an 8-3 win at No. 2 and Stephanie Moniz and Theresa Neumeyr finishing 8-0 at No. 3.

“We came out strong in doubles today and I was very happy with the way we performed,” Ferreira said. “Southern Nazarene has had a very good season this year and we expected a tough match.”

After winning three doubles, Brenau only needed to win two singles matches to advance.

Singles players Nagels (6-0, 6-1) at No. 5 and Tiffany de Almeida (6-0, 6-0) at No. 6 were the first to finish for the Golden Tigers to secure the win.

Choo, Neumeyr and Thompson were each a set ahead in their singles matches for Brenau when the match was decided.
