Brenau tennis advances four to semifinals

MILLEDGEVILLE — All four Brenau University tennis players reached the semifinal rounds of singles on Saturday at the GCSU Fall Invitational, with two advancing to the finals.

Liubov Orlova started the day with a win over Taryn Cappadona from Carson-Newman 7-5, 7-6(0). In the semifinals, Orlova was defeated by Martina Dedaj from Clayton State 7-5, 6-2.

Brenau’s Hannah Thompson quickly took out Katie Brown from Carson Newman 6-0, 6-2 to guarantee a spot in the final against Dedaj. Thompson fought hard and lost 7-5, 6-3 after almost two hours on the court.

Then Golden Tigers’ Eline Nagels also had a quick win in the semifinals, beating Tiffany Delias (Carson-Newman) 6-0, 6-0. Nagles’ opponent in the final came from the match between Nelli Martirosyan and Charllote Fabricius (Clayton State). Fabricius came up on top against Martirosyan, 7-5, 6-1, avoiding a Golden Tigers final.

After losing the first set 0-6, Eline maintained her composure, continued fighting and turned the match around, winning the second and third sets 6-2, 6-2, taking the trophy in the C singles flight.

In doubles, Orlova/Thompson lost in the quarterfinal against the number one seeded team from Clayton State Cercelletti/White (8-1).
Martirosyan/Nagels had a win over Brown/Wilson from Carson-Newman (8-5), before losing in the semis against Budd/Dedaj from Clayton State by the score of 8-4.
