Chestatee High has chosen a familiar face to take over its girls basketball program.
Former Lady War Eagles assistant Sutton Shirley will become the team’s new coach, according to a Hall County Schools news release. The move, which was announced Tuesday, is pending school board approval.
Shirley was an assistant at Chestatee from 2012-14 before spending the next four years in a similar role at East Hall. He has never been a head coach.
“Coach Shirley has been an integral part of the success in East Hall’s basketball program over the last few years, but he also understands the tradition of Chestatee’s program,” War Eagles athletic director Ben Corley said in the news release. “He has a great passion for basketball and a desire to see young people succeed that will serve him well as he leads our program into the future.”
Shirley will serve as the full-time replacement for interim coach Chris Guthrie, who assumed that role after former coach Web Daniel resigned last November amid allegations of sexual assault against a student — a felony — and misdemeanor sexual battery.
Chestatee has reached the playoffs in each of the last two seasons.
