Canizares, Braves crush Bisons

First baseman Barbaro Canizares drives in a season high six runs as the Gwinnett Braves defeat the Buffalo Bisons 9-1 Wednesday at Coca-Cola Field in Buffalo.

The Braves improve their record to 16-18 while the Bisons fall to 8-23. Gwinnett remains in third place in the International League South, five games behind the first place Norfolk Tides and 3.5 games behind second place Durham.

Canizares got the scoring going for the Braves in the first with a bases loaded sacrifice fly to center scoring Gregor Blanco from third. With the Braves holding a 1-0 lead in the third, Canizares ripped a two run homer to left giving the Braves a 3-0 advantage. In the sixth inning, with the Braves leading 6-1, Canizares hammers a bases loaded double to centerfield to push the margin to the final 9-1 score.

Brandon Jones and Diory Hernandez had two hits apiece for the Braves. Wes Timmons and Brooks Conrad also drove in a run each.

For Gwinnett, RHP Charlie Morton was again sharp picking up his fourth win of the year against two losses. Morton worked seven innings, giving up three hits and one earned run while striking out three. Vladimir Nunez worked a scoreless eighth and ninth.

RHP Brandon Knight picked up his third loss of the season against two wins. The Braves touched him for five runs in five innings of work.

The Braves and Bisons play game three of the four game series Thursday afternoon in Buffalo at 1:05 p.m. RHP Todd Redmond (2-2, 3.86 ERA) gets the start for the Braves. The Bisons counter with RHP Kyle Snyder (0-3, 4.05 ERA).
