Riley Mitchell was almost perfect on the mound, and his teammates rewarded him with six runs in the sixth as Flowery Branch scored a 7-0 victory over Woodland in Game 3 of their first-round Class 5A state playoff series Tuesday in Cartersville.
Mitchell (2-2, 1.02 ERA) allowed just one hit and struck out two in seven innings in his complete-game victory, threw 52 strikes among his 97 pitches and helped his own cause by going 2-for-3 at the plate, as the Falcons (21-11) advanced to travel to No. 5 Centennial for a second-round series, beginning with a doubleheader Saturday in Roswell.
Kade Smallwood and Austin Bourrie each had a hit and an RBI and Eli Mieldezis also drove in a run during the six-run outburst in the sixth that broke the game open.
Mason Compton also finished with a hit and an RBI for the Falcons. Jackson Freeman and Kyle Adamec also chipped in a hit apiece.
