ATLANTA — Atlanta Braves right-hander John Smoltz will begin a minor league injury rehabilitation assignment with Double-A Mississippi on Saturday.

Smoltz, who has been on the disabled list since April 29 with a sore shoulder, will join the Mississippi Braves at Tennessee.

Smoltz threw in Atlanta for the third straight day on Thursday, and his rehabilitation assignment was announced Friday.

Smoltz is pitching from a lower arm angle in an attempt to place less stress on the shoulder. He plans to pitch out of the bullpen, probably as Atlanta’s closer, when he returns.

The Braves also activated catcher Brayan Pena from the 15-day disabled list and designated him for assignment.
