DAHLONEGA — Lumpkin County’s comeback fell short as the Indians were unable to convert a fourth down late in the game againt Model, losing 21-18 Friday night at the Burial Grounds.
After taking a 10-7 lead into the half, the Indians found themselves trailing 21-10 after two Model third quarter touchdowns.
Lumpkin quarterback Zach Matthews (19 carries, 105 yards, TD) scored on a nine-yard run with 9:57 left in the fourth quarter. Matthews ran in the ensuing two-point conversion to pull the Indians within a field goal.
The Indians got the ball back with three minutes left. After a Model pass interfence penalty on fouth-and-17, Lumpkin failed to convert fourth-and-two from their own 30 yard-line.
Sophomore running back Cole White had 13 carries for 76 yards and a touchdown.
Lumpkin County (0-1) next plays in two weeks at Union County.
