LOGANVILLE — Senior Night for the Loganville High football team did not go according to plan Friday as the Gainesville Red Elephants School stormed past the Red Devils 63-0.

Gainesville improved to 8-1 and stayed unbeaten in Region 8-AAAAA play at 7-0.

The Devils fell to 4-5 and were knocked out of the state playoff picture.

“We didn’t execute great, but obviously to opponent has a lot to do with that, they won state last year and they have a great chance to win it again this year,” Loganville coach Eric Godfree said. “Our kids always fight and they never stopped, and I’ll always be proud of our kids no matter the outcome.”

The scoring for Gainesville started very early in the game when the Red Elephants recovered a fumbled punt in the end zone on Loganville’s first possession.

Gainesville was led on offense by senior quarterback, Deshaun Watson, who threw for 168 yards and rushed for 77 yards and added a total of five touchdowns, four passing and one rushing.

Junior running back Michael Byrd also had a stellar performance by adding 138 rushing yards and two touchdowns.

The defense also put points up on the scoreboard for Gainesville, including a 65 yard interception taken back for a touchdown by sophomore defensive back Toddrick Turner to close out the first half.

“They are just as good, maybe even better than last year,” Godfree said. “Deshaun is a special kid, but he has also some receivers that can go get the ball, and they have a defense that flies to the ball, runs hard, and is physical. They have a great chance of going all the way again.”

Gainesville will look to finish perfect in region play at home against Flowery Branch on Friday at City Park Stadium.

Loganville will close out its season on the road against Salem.
