Suffering a major concussion has given Chestatee’s Jay Mays ‘a fresh perspective on life,’ according to War Eagles coach Bill Forman.

Mays was released from Northeast Georgia Medical Center around 1 a.m. Saturday morning after a hard hit forced him out of action in the third quarter of Chestatee’s 42-3 loss to West Hall on Sept. 4.

“He had a concussion, but that was the extent of it,” said Forman on Tuesday. “They did all their tests and all, but he’ll probably only be out for a couple weeks, but praise God, he’ll be back.”

The senior was tackled out of bounds following a run play near the Chestatee sideline with 3:21 left in the quarter. Forman said he saw Mays stand up after the tackle, attempt to pass the ball to Forman, then fall to the ground.

“Honestly, I knew immediately, as soon as I saw the hit,” said Forman. “I said, ‘Jay, are you OK?’ when he stood up … I could tell by looking in his eye that he wasn’t there. It really puts everything in perspective.”

Coaches and medical staff attended to Mays near the 45-yard line. A Hall County ambulance took Mays off the field after about 15 minutes. Forman said that he, fellow coaches, and members of West Hall’s administration came to visit Mays after the game.

The Chestatee coach said he was ‘overwhelmed’ with messages of support and concern from all across Hall County. Mays will be monitored by the team’s sports doctors, and will only be allowed back on the field after he passes all of their protocols, according to Forman.

“It’s given him a fresh perspective on life,” said Forman. “We’re all very thankful that it wasn’t any worse, and that he’s still got some football to be played. He’s a very thankful young man.”
