Your Views: Student should have expected police scrutiny

Jim Duffy, the University of Georgia student who alleges profiling during questioning by sheriff’s deputies and FBI agents, should not be surprised.

Based wholly on the photo that appeared with the story, I would conclude that if you choose to assume the appearance of a thug, then you should not be surprised to be treated as one.

As to profiling — that is, "making judgments about people based on how they look" — everyone automatically does it whenever we meet someone for the first time. In spite of his protestations, I’m sure Jim Duffy also performs the same mental evaluation of everyone he meets for the first time.
