Contrary to the remark by a Times columnist that the observance is just a commercial ploy, there is a meaningful beginning for Mother's Day. The observance began by women whose sons went off to battle in the Civil War, a conflict that divided many families.
To set the record straight, we will feature the real story on Brenau University Public Radio WBCX 89.1 at 8 a.m. Saturday, May 14 on the program "Celebrations: Arts Alive!" Each week, we tell how "there is a reason for every season and every day is a celebration because art starts in the heart and art is the heart of education."
Our program is a collaboration of many local schools, arts agencies and community volunteers. Hats off to our audio editor, Brett Braaten of Storybook Productions, for making the most of this showcase of local talent.
