Letter: Educational value of garden at Enota should factor into plans

Recent research in the field of education emphasizes the importance of the “softer side” of our schools. Students behave better, focus better and remember more if they are relaxed and have chances during the day to enjoy music, art and, yes, recess.

Gardening is one of those activities that combines fun, recreation and art with hard science. In an “informal poll” of students, teachers, parents and longtime supporters of local schools, it seems to me that there is close to 100 percent determination to keep the garden at Enota Multiple Intelligences Academy.

The University of Georgia has recently given the garden and its related curriculum high marks and praise. Smartville Garden is not just a good garden, it’s a great garden. Occasionally it can be wise to step back, rethink and find a way to do the right thing, however inconvenient. I hope our city school system is willing to do that.
