Phip Wilheit roasted by family while receiving award

As Philip “Phip” Wilheit Jr. was awarded the Young Man of the Year award Thursday evening at a Gainesville Jaycees banquet, the audience was treated to several stories of Phip as a young boy.

Trey Wood, last year’s Young Man of the Year, shared a story from Wilheit’s sister, Hart Payne, who described her brother as “tough, but hard-headed.”

“Hart Payne tells me, ‘Phip did not always use his brain growing up,’” Wood said.

When Wilheit was 3, he was on a dock on Lake Lanier when he decided he wanted to “jump in and hit his head on a rock.”

He had three layers of stitches for his hard work.

“Wow,” Wilheit said as he stepped up to the podium to accept his award. “I’m not sure if I’m getting an award or getting roasted.”
