An elderly woman was killed in a Cornelia residential fire along with several pets, and a firefighter was taken to a local hospital for burns.

The fire departments for Cornelia and Demorest as well as Habersham County Emergency Services responded after 7 p.m. Friday, June 28, to a fire in the Lakeview Heights subdivision of Cornelia.

“There was a family member present when the fire originated but was unable to get the elderly victim out who was located on the sofa in the den. The elderly victim, who is identified as Jean Sensow, age 79, was disabled and unable to get out unfortunately,” Habersham County Emergency Services Director Chad Black wrote in an email.

When firefighters attempted to locate Sensow and extinguish the fire, the ceiling fell on top of a Demorest firefighter. The firefighter was transported to the Habersham County Medical Center emergency room for burns to his wrist and back, Black said.

“Several pets were not able to get out and succumbed to the fire,” Black said.

Black said the fire appeared to have originated in the kitchen, but the case is still under investigation by the fire marshal’s office.
