A Sautee Nachoochee woman was injured Thursday and airlifted to an Atlanta hospital after a one-vehicle accident on Cleveland Highway.

The wreck happened at about 5:45 p.m. when the vehicle driven by Wanda Marcell Nicely, 42, ran off the road and overturned down an embankment, according to Frank Young, with the Department of Public Safety.

Nicely was not wearing a seat belt and was ejected from the vehicle, Young said. She was taken to Grady Memorial Hospital. There were no passengers in the vehicle.

Witnesses said the vehicle, a Volkswagen Beetle, ran off the road just south of Tops Bait Shop.

"I saw the car in the air," said Cleveland resident Joan Kinney, who was driving home behind the victim. "I pulled in (to Tops) because I knew someone was going to need some help."

Kinney said the woman was lying on the ground outside the car when she walked back to the wreck.
