A day at Lake Lanier turned tragic Sunday afternoon after a woman found unresponsive in the water died later at Northeast Georgia Medical Center in Gainesville.

“We are still investigating as to how (she) wound up in the lake,” said Deputy Nicole Bailes, Hall County Sheriff’s Office spokeswoman.

An autopsy likely will take place this week, although “there were no obvious signs of foul play,” she said.

Authorities are waiting until next of kin is notified before releasing the name of the woman, who is in her early 60s.

The woman was with other family preparing for a day on the lake with their boat, Bailes said.

“My understanding was that family members located her floating face-down near the boat dock” in an area off Lakeview Drive and Woodlake Drive in South Hall County, she said.

They removed her from the water, Bailes said.

“Rescue efforts were performed on the (woman) until medical personnel could arrive on scene,” Bailes said.

The woman was pronounced dead upon arriving at the hospital.
