Freezing rain, sleet and snow is expected to hit North Georgia tonight and continue into Saturday, just three weeks after area residents battled snow and icy roads.

The National Weather Service has issued a winter storm warning for an area that roughly includes Gainesville and areas north of the city through Saturday.

According to the warning, a line north of Dawsonville to Gainesville to Danielsville should expect a mixture of snow, sleet and freezing rain with snowfall amounts of three to six inches possible. Ice accumulations of up to a half inch are expected.

A line north from Ellijay to Helen could see seven to nine inches of snow. Ice accumulations there could reach three-quarters of an inch.

The threat has already led many area schools to cancel evening activities.

According to the National Weather Service, heavy wet snow and ice accumulations may result in downed tree branches and power lines. Travel is expected to become hazardous or impossible.
