A Buford woman was indicted and charged last week in the 2015 shooting death of her husband, a case previously considered to be a suicide, police said.

Liubov Volkova, 35, is charged with murder in the death of her husband, Jordan Whitson, 38. She was booked Friday in to the Gwinnett County Jail.

Gwinnett County Police responded around 1:30 a.m. Nov. 1, 2015, to the 2500 block of Hampton Park Drive in Buford, where Volkova told the dispatcher “that her husband just shot himself in the cheek,” Cpl. Michele Pihera wrote in a news release.

“The wife, Liubov, met the officers at the door and told them where they could find her husband inside the home,” Pihera wrote.

Whitson was unresponsive on the stairs and died as a result of his injuries.

According to the initial report, two officers performed a sweep of the house and found no one inside other than an infant in the nursery. The officers handed the child to Volkova.

“(Volkova) told the officers where she secured the gun prior to their arrival,” Pihera wrote.

Pihera said specific details about the investigation would not be released, but the detective “does not believe the gunshot was self-inflicted,” she said.
