Poll officers Bill Luttrell, right, and Maxine Wagner check voters in Tuesday morning at the Quillians precinct inside the North Hall Community Center. Voter turnout at the precinct was light but steady in Georgia's presidential primary.

Trends among those who spoke with The Times when leaving the polls in today's presidential primary reveal that older white voters are showing strong support for Republican Donald Trump and young voters are turning out for Democrat Bernie Sanders.

Georgia is among 11 states holding primaries Tuesday to select nominees for the fall election.

Political pundits have predicted Trump and Hillary Clinton to win the Peach State primary, but Sanders has gained momentum in Hall County.

“We need to protect civil rights,” Lauren Jasper, a 20-something resident and recent university graduate, said after casting a ballot at the Brenau Downtown Center.

She said Sanders, a senator from Vermont, is the most trustworthy and consistent of all the candidates.

Resident Loel Wheeler was one of many individuals who voted for Trump at the First Baptist Church on Green Street.

“I’m tired of it,” he said of the current state of affairs in Washington, adding that he supports the businessman “even if he is loony.”
