Visitors to the farmers market on the square had an extra treat Friday — good ol' Southern tomato sandwiches.

Jordan Teague put together white bread, mayonnaise, a slice of tomato and a little salt and pepper and handed out the sandwiches to anyone interested. The market was bustling with customers buying their own tomatoes, too.

Other items available included blueberries, squash, green beans, cucumbers, specialty breads and desserts.

The market in downtown Gainesville is open 2:30-6:30 p.m. Fridays.

A market also operates Saturday and Tuesday mornings at East Crescent Drive off Jesse Jewell Parkway near Interstate 985 Exit 24.

Another market offers items to South Hall residents 4-7 p.m. Thursdays at the Spout Springs library.
