Two people and a pet died Monday morning after a mobile home caught fire in Clarkesville, according to authorities.

Habersham County Assistant Fire Chief Jason Davey said the department arrived around 6:20 a.m. Monday on Waterway Court in Clarkesville to a singlewide mobile home fire.

Adam Jeremiah Chitwood, 28, and Tina Marie Chitwood, 44, were transported from the scene to Habersham Medical Center, where they were pronounced dead in the emergency room, Davey said.

Davey said one dog died at the scene of the fire.

“We had one firefighter get hurt with back injuries, and he’s been treated and released,” he said.

The state fire marshal’s office is conducting the investigation, and the cause of the fire was not released.

Chris Stephens of the state fire marshal’s office said the Chitwoods were found in the bathroom.

The Clarkesville Fire Department, Habersham EMS and the Lee Arrendale State Prison fire station responded.

Habersham County Deputy Coroner Dr. Kenneth Franklin said authorities are looking at smoke inhalation as a cause of death. The bodies have been sent to the state lab for autopsies.
