Sonny’s BBQ in Oakwood has closed its doors after 20 years.
“Sorry we can’t satisfy your craving for BBQ today,” reads a sign posted to the front door of the restaurant at 3445 Mundy Mill Road. “This location has closed after 20 years of serving BBQ slathered in Southern hospitality.”
The sign goes on to thank patrons for their support over the years and refers them to a location at 1905 Buford Mill Drive in Buford.
Sonny’s franchise owner Ron Donley said he has been forced to close three of eight Sonny’s restaurants this year, including the one in Oakwood, “because we couldn’t get them remodeled in the time frame Sonny’s (corporate officials) wanted, so they have taken away our franchise there.”
All the Oakwood employees were offered a job at the Buford store, Donley said.
“For the square footage of the (Oakwood) building, it’s a very marketable lease right now, so I’m hoping that we’ll find somebody to go in there,” he added.
Sonny’s closing is the latest in a string of similar announcements from longtime Oakwood businesses.
Pizza Hut shuttered its 40-year-old location at 3815 Mundy Mill Road. The restaurant, however, opened a carryout and delivery-only store in October in the Merchants Crossing Shopping Center off Mundy Mill Road and Mundy Mill Drive.
Dorks College Textbooks at 3640 Mundy Mill Road has closed.
“It has been an incredible journey and we have all had a wonderful and blessed time serving the students, faculty and parents in and around Georgia and Tennessee,” states the business’ website.
Dorks also operated a bookstore in Dahlonega.
Oakwood Ace Hardware, which is located a couple of stores down from Jan’s Hallmark, is creating a Hallmark section in its store. The change will take place April 5, the store has said.
