Some mountain area schools still closed Wednesday

Some local school systems will be closed Wednesday due to inclement winter weather:

  • Towns County schools
  • Union County schools

Freezing rain is expected Wednesday night but isn’t supposed to cause slippery surfaces in the Gainesville area, the National Weather Service predicts.

“It will make things wet, but no accumulation is expected,” said forecaster Laura Belanger of the weather service office in Peachtree City.

Belanger said counties in the North Georgia mountains could have slick areas from the approaching lower pressure system from Texas.

After 8 p.m. and into the early Thursday morning hours, Belanger said, there is a 30-50 percent chance of freezing rain for the Gainesville area, which will see temperatures in the low 30s.

“Temperatures will warm up very early Thursday morning,” she said, and “we should be above freezing Thursday morning and through the weekend.”

Thursday’s high will reach about 50 and the temperature will drop to about 40 early Friday morning, Belanger said.
