National Weather Service forecast for Gainesville

The official start of winter is still a few days off, but some areas of North Georgia will feel a taste of it this weekend.

A mix of cold air and increasing moisture could produce areas of light freezing rain over far Northeast Georgia overnight, the National Weather Service is reporting. With temperatures hovering around freezing, a light drizzle could produce a glaze on trees, power lines, bridges and overpasses in the Georgia Mountains.

A freezing rain advisory is in effect until 9 a.m. Saturday in Rabun County.

Little or no accumulation is expected, and temperatures are expected to rise above freezing by sunrise, ending the threat. Saturday will be warmer but wet, with a chance of showers and highs in the lower 50s.

Even warmer air Sunday could bring a few thunderstorms, with wet weather likely through the start of next week.
