Saturday was the first time a flag retirement ceremony has been held at the American Legion Post 7 in Gainesville. The Legion collects flags in bins in front of the post from anyone who has worn out flags that need to be properly retired. The proper way to retire a flag is burning or burying the flag. Typically, flag-retirement ceremonies are held by members of the Boy Scouts or veterans groups.
