Runners sprint for a good cause in Sheriff's 5K
Runners take part in Saturday's Sheriff’s Summer Sprint 5K fundraiser road race in Gainesville.

A total of 115 runners and walkers took part Saturday in the inaugural Sheriff’s Summer Sprint 5K fundraiser road race.

The event’s proceeds will benefit the Georgia Sheriff’s Youth Homes. Participants braved the hilly Allen Creek Road course, and were greeted by Sheriff Gerald Couch at the start and finish.

The overall 5K winner was Miguel Martinez, 16, of Gainesville in a time of 17:36.4. Rounding out the top 10 were Justin Wood of Commerce, Fanthun Zewde of Gainesville, Chad Maddox of Dahlonega, Dale Marrou of Dahlonega, Anthony Montoya of Gainesville, Alec Zimmerman of Gainesville, Will Buffington of Gillsville, Mark Lane of Gainesville and Jesus Calderon of Pendergrass.

Jessica Adams, 28, of Hoschton was the top female runner, placing 11th overall.
